SOMETHING LIKE IT HOT
After the Civil War, banker Edmund McIlhenny had the idea of planting a few chili seeds on Avery Island. In 1868, he started his spicy experiments with the production of a chili sauce that was something special! He grabbed the red-orange, fully ripe chili peppers with salt from the salt dome on Avery Island and then added natural vinegar. He then filled the fiery concoction into washed-out perfume bottles. The experiment quickly turned into a business, and Edmund began selling the first bottles of his legendary TABASCO® sauce.
IT'S GETTING HOT
McIlhenny first launched 658 bottles of TABASCO® sauce in the bottle design that is still appreciated today: narrow-necked glass containers, equipped with a practical sprinkler and sealed with green wax.
TABASCO® SAUCE CONQUERS GERMANY
The hot sauce innovation reached Germany during the founder's lifetime: According to Edmund McIlhenny's diary, TABASCO® sauce was exported across the pond to Germany for the first time in 1881. A buyer in Dresden received 72 bottles.
TABASCO® SAUCE IS PATENTED
In 1912, when numerous imitators began to imitate the successful sauce, Edward McIlhenny secured trademark protection for TABASCO® Sauce. This guaranteed not only the protection of the brand, but also the outstanding quality of every bottle bearing the name TABASCO® Brand Pepper Sauce.
OFF INTO SPACE
TABASCO® Sauce is expanding its reach and is now adding spice to NASA’s otherwise bland space food.
FAMILY GROWTH
With over a century of experience in the production of chili sauce, the McIlhenny Company is constantly developing new flavor variations in the TABASCO® Sauce Laboratory.
